Introductory Letter

My name is Nichole and I am currently a social work major, women’s studies minor, hoping to apply to the social work program in the Fall! I transferred to UCF last semester and love it! I’m from Melbourne, but have lived in North Carolina and Rhode Island; I liked them all equally, but for very different reasons. I’m a complete foodie, I love to eat and cook; I’ll try just about anything, I love sushi and Indian food, some of my favorites. I am also an iced tea and coffee fanatic, they are my favorite things to drink.
Aside from the trivial stuff about me I became really interested in women’s studies and feminism about two years ago and have been pretty angry ever sense, however I have calmed down significantly. I’m really excited about Global and Transnational because I know this class will be an eye-opener. Up to this point the only real interaction I’ve had with women’s studies and feminism is what exists in the U.S. and I’m eager to get out of that box and see things with a different perspective, especially considering I would love to pursue a career on a more macro-level of feminism. I also think that on a global scale feminist movement vary so greatly, and would like to know more about these movements and get a better understanding of feminism as a whole, from a more informed and global point of view.
I think the most difficult and exciting part of learning about how women have and are mobilizing on a global scale is that I don’t expect it to look like any other movement that I am familiar with. I am also anxious to learn about the intersectionality of global feminist movements, religion, region, and politics; therefore getting an idea as to what, for instance, a Muslim, feminist movement looks like.
More than anything I want to gain perspective and understanding about worldwide feminist movements from this class. Too often I encounter people/ feminists that are so adamant that women’s movements don’t happen in places like Iraq or India, but I think they do and that we are just not as familiar with what they look like in that setting. I’m irritated when I hear people bash middle eastern women for wearing a veil because a veil in its self is not anti-feminist, yet I too am ignorant about this type of thing, and hope to better understand these issues by the end of this class.
